  • Q. What kind of warranty do you provide?

    We will provide a limited warranty. If the device is defective we will replace it. If you damage it or decide that you don't want it after we've shipped it to you, we will not be able to replace the device or offer a refund.

Power supply

  • Q. Can I use the lock at night?

    Yes! Ellipse has a battery that continuously recharges with sunlight.

  • Q. What happens if I live in a cloudy or foggy area?

    The average amount of sunlight will decrease so it will take longer to fully charge Ellipse. A rule of thumb is that 12 hours of full direct sunlight will provide enough energy to run the Ellipse for 6 months of "normal use". Normal use is defined as 5 lock/unlock events per day.

  • Q. What happens if Ellipse runs out of battery?

    Short answer is it will not be able to unlock. However, this situation will rarely if ever happen as is the case with other products that use similar technology (wristwatches). A rule of thumb to keep in mind is: a fully charged battery has enough power to run the lock for six months with absolutely no light exposure. Should the battery still fully drain, a few options to unlock it are:

    Expose the lock to sunlight to recharge it
    Find a micro-USB cable and a power source (iPhone, external battery, Laptop etc.) and recharge it externally.

  • Q. Can I recharge the lock in any other way?

    Yes, the lock will have a micro-USB port.

  • Q. How long will the battery last without any exposure to light?

    This depends on two factors:
    Usage behavior State of charge when the lock was stored. Rules of thumb to remember: A fully charged battery should run for six months with regular use (as described above). If the lock is stored in a place with no sunlight it will take about six months to deplete itself if the battery is fully charged. If you intend to use a lock that has been stored for extended periods of time, make sure it gets a few hours of sunlight or charge it manually. It will take a fully depleted lock about twelve hours to fully recharge.

  • Q. Can I recharge my lock with a flashlight?

    Yes, but this it will take a long time. Sunlight energy is approximately 150 times stronger than that of a flashlight, plus it has a much wider spectrum in the infrared zone. In other words, it would take a really long time to charge, it would be probably more practical to use a sunlight lamp or incandescent bulb. If you want to try this, feel free to do it and let us know how it went! (if you can make a video even better)

  • Q. Can it recharge with indoor light?

    It depends. Artificial light is very dim in comparison to full-spectrum sunlight, so while incandescent bulbs and fluorescent bulbs can provide a bit of energy, this is not recommended. If the light is coming from a nearby window or skylight, then yes. A lock by a window will get about 5-20% that of full sun exposure, or even more if in direct sunlight. This is highly recommended.

  • Q. What happens if I store my lock for x number of days?

    If stored in absolute darkness, a fully charged battery will last about six months. This is because no circuit is ever perfectly “off” and the battery will leak some power. If this is done, it is recommended to expose the lock to a few hours of sunlight or charge it manually before use.

  • Q. How long do I need to leave it in the sun for the battery to fully charge?

    It depends on how much charge the battery has and the conditions of the sunlight. Full, direct, bright sunlight will recharge the battery in twelve hours. This is enough to run the device for a week with no further exposure.

  • Q. Will it work at extreme temperatures?

    Yes and no. The circuits are specified to work under an industrial temperature range covering -20 to +85°C. The battery can be discharged and allow the lock to operate in the same temperature range, but any charging will be fully disabled if the temperature is below 0°C. This is to protect the battery from damage.

  • Q. What is the lifetime of the battery?

    Given that the charge / recharge cycles are so slow, and the battery technology can take up to 1000 of them, it can in theory last 10+ years. 6+ years is the expected lifetime.

  • Q. What happens if the battery fails?

    Ellipse will have to be jump started from the outside using an USB cable. We will provide a limited warranty. If the device is defective we will fix or replace it at our discretion.

Locking / Unlocking

  • Q. What happens if my phone gets stolen / is lost / runs out of battery?

    You can unlock your Ellipse using the capacitive buttons. Simply input the combination you provided during initial setup.

  • Q. Do I need to use the app to unlock it?

    Conventionally Ellipse is locked and unlocked via the app. This can also be achieved via the capacitive touch pad by entering your pin.

  • Q. Can I change my key code?

    Yes, you can.

  • Q. What happens if I forget my code and my phone is dead?

    You can borrow someone else's phone, download the app, sign in using your username and password, then use that phone to open it.

  • Q. Can I unlock my bike by proximity to my phone?

    Yes. This is optional, some people might not want this active because of security reasons.

  • Q. Can I share access with others?

    Yes! Just add trusted users through the app. You can even link it to your social media accounts for easy user management.

Theft Notification

  • Q. How do theft alerts work?

    Ellipse is equipped with a triaxial accelerometer to detect tampering conditions. If a potential tamper condition exists, the lock will send an alert to your phone.

  • Q. Can Ellipse track my bike?

    No. There are other products on the market that do that. If someone is actually able to break into the lock or somehow steal your bike, there is nothing we can do. Our aim is to prevent theft not to track thieves. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  • Q. Can I get false alarms?

    Yes, unfortunately no system will ever be free of false alarms. A closely related question is: What constitutes a false alarm? If someone is shaking/disturbing your bike and leaves before you check on it, it might seem like a false alarm.


  • Q. How secure is Ellipse vs. the competition?

    Very. We mean this. We built this from the ground up including the industrial design, mechanism and frame. Our lock is at least as secure as the top competitor. Ellipse is equipped with dual locking pins so a potential thief would need to cut the lock twice before being able to steal the bike.

  • Q. What is “Auto-Lock” and how do I use it?

    Auto-Lock, is term we use for proximity locking. You can enable this feature through your settings so you don’t have to use the app to unlock Ellipse. With this feature on, we use the signal strength indication (RSSI) to unlock Ellipse as you approach it.

  • Q. Can Ellipse survive a freeze attack?

    Yes, it was designed and tested to resist freezing attacks.

  • Q. A lever attack?

    Yes, we designed Ellipse small enough to prevent purchase from a jack. The dual locking mechanism also doubles the locking force, allowing up to 10,000 lbs tensile load.

  • Q. Can it be cut open?

    Yes, any lock can be cut with enough time and the right tools. Since Ellipse requires two cuts to break, this means you have twice the amount of time to respond to a theft alert.

  • Q. Can it be picked?

    No it can’t. There is no way to pick the lock mechanism.

  • Q. What happens if the solar panel is smashed?

    The solar panel is protected by a very strong UV-cured polycarbonate cover. The panel itself cannot be smashed per se. However, as long as the battery has some charge the lock will still work. You can still recharge it manually through USB. You can send your lock back to us for repair as well.

  • Q. Can Ellipse be hacked?

    It is possible but extremely unlikely. Ellipse uses 256 bit eliptic curve cryptography combined with RSA public key infrastructure to secure your lock. It would be easier to cut the lock. We don’t publicly discuss the way we handle passwords for obvious reasons, but we use all the latest technologies to ensure Ellipse is as secure as it can be.

  • Q. Is Ellipse Waterproof?

    Ellipse is water resistant, but not waterproof. The lock is designed to withstand rain and light snow but not submerging in water.

Crash Alerts

  • Q. What are crash alerts?

    Crash Alerts are a way to notify your loved ones of potential accidents while you ride your bike.

  • Q. How does crash alerts work?

    If you happen to crash your bike or if a car hits you, your phone will notify your preferred contacts about your accident automatically. You will need a lock and a phone for this feature to work.

  • Q. What happens if I drop Ellipse or my phone?

    The system will only work if both devices detect a shock at the same time.

  • Q. What happens if I have Ellipse and phone in my backpack, and I drop them?

    The system will ask you if you are ok and take action if you don’t reply, so if you activate this feature, keep this in mind and don’t slam your backpack.

  • Supported iOS devices

    Ellipse is compatible with iOS devices that have Bluetooth 4.0 hardware and that are running iOS 7.0 or later. Below is a list of devices that support these specs:
